A second opinion "light". A good conversation with a medical specialist
If after visiting your own doctor you still need more information, we are here to help. Or, if you can’t decide which of several treatment options best is for you. Hikos offers you the chance to make an online appointment with a medical specialist. The appointment is carried out using video calling so you don’t need to leave the house. This service meets the needs of many patients who are looking for a second opinion: a good conversation with a qualified and knowlegable physician who takes the time to listen to your needs.
Are you looking for a good conversation with a knowledgeable physician?
Hikos doesn’t provide second opinions in the same way that hospitals do. Nevertheless, we meet an important need. Many patients who are looking for a second opinion are really just looking for a good consultation with a qualified medical specialist. And that is precisely why Hikos exists.
What is a second opinion?
A second opinion is an expert opinion from a different doctor than your own. This “second doctor” assesses the diagnosis and/or treatment plan proposed by the first doctor on the basis of, among other things, your medical file. The second doctor is independent and works in the same specialty as the first doctor. So, if you have visited an orthopedic surgeon and still have questions about the diagnosis or treatment advice, you can arrange a second opinion by another orthopedic surgeon. In principle, after the second opinion you return to your first doctor for treatment, if called for. According to the law, you have the right to a second opinion. A second opinion is reimbursed from the basic Dutch insurance coverage.
What happens during a second opinon?
The doctor that provides the second opinion (the second doctor), studies the material from the first doctor containing his or her findings along with the diagnosis and treatment advice. This is often followed by an appointment with the second doctor. He or she may ask more questions and conduct an examination. You can, of course, also ask questions. Very occasionally extra tests are performed. The second doctor formulates his/her findings, diagnosis and treatment advice and reports this back to the first doctor.
Why do patients request a second opinion?
A number of studies indicate that patients who request a second opinion are often looking for more information about the proposed treatment or about the disease. They’re looking for more certainty. A large proportion of these patients want to make a well-informed choice about their own treatment. In other words, they want to participate in shared decision-making. Finally, there is a group of patients who are not satisified with their communication with their first doctor and therefore look for a second opinion. Whether you are looking for more information, help in choosing the best treatment plan or specialist who has the time to listen to you, Hikos has something to offer. Not a second opinion, but a good conversation with a knowlegable physician.
